Embodiment of Evil
AKA: Encarnação do Demônio
Brazil  2008, 90 min

An ode to midnight movies of days gone by, mutilated bodies and disturbing sex acts await you as the final chapter of cult fan favorite Coffin Joe digs his sharp talons into your soul.

Over forty years have past since At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul and This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse introduced Coffin Joe to audiences around the world. Freshly released from a mental ward, Coffin Joe is back to fulfill his bloody mission: to find a suitable female to bear him a child who will continue his reign of terrifying torture and vicious mayhem. But as the ghosts of Joe’s past victims haunt him and as multiple Coffin Joe worshippers are brutally sacrificed one after another, he’s unaware that an elderly police officer, along with a mentally unstable priest holding a grudge, are out to stop him. The film influences are pure Grand Guignol theatrics but updated for the new millennium with enough gore and nudity to satiate exploitation fans. But beyond the bloodshed, director/actor Marins adds weirdly colorful touches to create a twisted world, from a sex scene where the participants drown in a pool of blood to a surreal tour that Coffin Joe takes inside a woman’s vagina. It’s a freaky joyride that fans of Coffin Joe have come to expect and new converts will relish. (Portuguese with English subtitles) -- Lewis Tice
